How Scientists Are Doubling Solar Power Outputs

    Last updated 2 months ago

Increasing the power output of solar panels is one of the primary goals of those working in the solar industry, and new research may lead to record outputs of more than 50 per cent being achieved.

    Conversion Efficiency Goal

Conversion efficiency of more than 50 per cent would be almost double the maximum power output achieved by standard solar panels at present, which typically convert less than 20 per cent of the energy they receive from sunlight into usable electricity. By increasing the conversion efficiency of solar panels, fewer panels will be needed to yield the same power, leading to reduced costs that could help the solar industry become more competitive against fossil fuels.

    Sorting Sunlight by Colour

This new research project has received $2.4 million in funding from the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy and involves splitting sunlight between eight and ten different colours, which will then be directed towards solar cells using semiconductors. This is predicted to lead to more energy being absorbed by the solar cells, producing a greater power output.

Although there have been previous efforts to split sunlight into its component colours in this way, to use more of the spectrum for solar panel absorption, the optics used have not been sufficiently precise.

Great Solar looks At the World's Largest Low Concentration PV Solar Farm

    Last updated 2 months ago

The White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico will generate around 10 per cent of its total electricity from solar panels, according to new reports from the U.S. Army.

    4.1 Megawatt LCPV Facility

The White Sands facility will generate approximately 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, providing up to 10 per cent of the site’s total power consumption, saving $930,000 and helping to offset carbon emissions by 7,400 tons in line with the U.S. Army’s commitment to green operations.

The site’s location in New Mexico enables it to benefit from high levels of sun exposure throughout the year, and the facility will include a 375 kW solar carport.

    Construction and Management

The $16.8 million solar farm was constructed between April and December 2012, and is mounted on single-axis tracking systems that follow the position of the sun throughout the day, and increase energy yields by 30 per cent compared to static panels.

The array will be operated and maintained by Siemens Industry, Inc. at comparable cost to what the U.S. Army would have paid a power company. The site utilises low cost technology through Low Concentration PV (LCPV), operating at the equivalent of two to 100 suns without requiring expensive components or materials.

Royalla to Be the Site of Australia's Largest Solar Farm

    Last updated 3 months ago

The Royalla Solar Farm in the Australian Capital Territory is set to be a major provider of residential solar energy upon its completion in 2014, but some local residents have voiced their opposition to the proposed installation due to concerns over the impact to the landscape.

This report from ABC News covers both sides of the debate between Royalla residents, who state the planned installation of 83,000 solar panels will spoil their views of the surroundings, and solar power supporters who highlight the significant energy savings this facility will provide. The Royalla Solar Farm is forecasted to provide enough energy to power 4,500 Canberra homes and help the ACT become a leader in renewable energy in Australia.

This 50-hectare solar farm will also create numerous jobs in the area and represents investment in the city. The development contract was awarded to a Spanish-based company and construction is set to begin promptly to have the facility up and running by next year, pending finalised arrangements with the National Capital Authority. Despite the concerns of some Royalla residents, the facility has been granted approval by all the relevant environmental protection organisations.

Royalla was chosen as the ideal location for this solar farm over others due to its landscape and orientation, both of which are beneficial for solar panels. These solar panels will not produce any noise, pollution or emissions as they generate clean electricity from sunlight.

How the ACT is Planning to Produce 90 Per Cent Clean Energy by 2020

    Last updated 3 months ago

The Australian Capital Territory has implemented a new renewable energy target of 90 per cent for renewable energy generated by solar panels and other clean energy generators by 2020.

    New parliamentary agreement

The Labour Party and Green Party signed a joint agreement on 2 November 2012 to increase investment in solar energy for commercial businesses in the ACT up to 2020. In the months leading up to its re-election, the Labour Government revised its Climate Change Action Plan for the capital region to demonstrate the effectiveness of renewable energy systems as measures to combat global warming.

The first stage of this action plan is focused on residential solar energy as a means to reduce household energy bills, which has been a major issue in recent political campaigns Australia-wide. Large scale renewable energy is planned to roll-out in 2017, incorporating two 20MW wind farms and multiple solar installations.

    Behaviour changes

In addition to greater investment in solar and wind power, the ACT Government will also incite behavioural changes in commuters and state residents by encouraging greater use of public transport and improving waste management practices. The government is aiming for 30 per cent of all journeys to be made by less environmentally damaging public transport and for all materials except organic waste to be removed from landfill sites, all of which is hoped to reduce carbon emissions to pre-1990 levels before 2020.
